she's a boy i knew
she's a boy i knew is an autiobiographical documentary by B.C. filmmaker gwen haworth, who interviews her family, partner, and friends about their perspective on her transition. her incisive yet inviting narration pilots the film, engaging in both conversations with those in her life but also everyone watching the film. she offers up a measured and meditative first-hand reflection on the profound cocaphony of emotions and fears that accompany transition and bravely splices a wealth of pre (and early) transition archival footage into her film. animated sequences are used effectively to disarm the audience and bring them into haworth's world which she has invited us to witness.

while haworth is a film prof at a community college and not a newcomer to making docs she is first and foremost an activist. by eliciting empathy and not sypathy, by bringing the humanity and the realness into an experience and an identity that is so fundamentally alien or unintelligible to most, this film is not just captivating and watchable, but is accessible and relevant and meaningful to everyone - cis or trans. particularly because haworth recognizes the need for realistic and humanizing portrayals of trans women (and especially trans dykes such as her and i), what is *most* remarkable about she's a boy i knew is that it holds together in a sweet, coherent, satisfying and accessible way. gwen was able to distill years of footage, insert a very clear agenda, toss in the personal motivation to tell such a story - all of these could have easily caused the film to drag on or dissolve into self-referential incoherence.

yet, one leaves the theatre feeling that this was all so simple to make. and such a story - one that's never been told before - is not a simple story to tell. not when it's your life, not when it's your agenda, not when you're writing and creating - in a cultural sense - your own existential niche.

for me, seeing this film was a life-changing experience. i many respects i feel more real now that something that speaks to my experience so closely has been created - it's there, it's permanant, it... exists.

after its screening this weekend at inside/out in toronto, she's a boy i knew (with director haworth in tow) will be screening at the other 2 large north american queer & trans film fests:

Wednesday, June 11, 5:30 PM, New York (newfest)

AND

Tuesday, June 24, 9:30 PM, San Francisco (frameline)

no.. send me your #...

my e-mail is splinterjeter@yahoo.ca

okay, random thing... would you be interested in co-facilitating a sex discussion on saturday morning at thc? just think about it... the workshop that i'm doing can't really happen as my co-fac has had to cancel cause of insane circumstances (her ED embezzled a tonne of cash and the agency where she works had to close so, yeah, she's not coming). i really want there to be a dicussion about sex at THC but both her workshop on sex work and ours is now cancelled... :(

Oh and yes, we really need to talk about the workshop. I'm super psyched about it. I also want to bounce some ideas around with you about a caucus too.

wow, i think I'll need to see this after your review. I tend to avoid pretty all autobiographical media from transwomen because it's just too hard to really connect to, especially the type that solicit sympathy.

oh, me too but i had the gut feeling that things can be done differently and this film achieved it.

to offer a counterpose, i actually scoffed out loud at the trans shorts screening the night before when there a couple of the usual atrocities being committed on screen (y'know... the montage where she rolls on the fishnets, puts on the make-up, pensively looks in the mirror). sigh...

Cool, I was wondering your thoughts on the film. I thought it was really good.

I missed the trans screening cuz I had been excited about "Razzle Dazzle" since I first heard about it. I probably would have missed my own screening for it! I had heard good things about the program but no specifics form someone who was there. I'd like to hear more (privately is a-ok, ya know?).

I'd also really like your thoughts on my film. I'm going to have a small cafe screening of it and a couple others for folks that missed it.

Gwen rocks! Literally. She's also a fantastic DJ (she spun for us for our HTD festival last month). I got to be in the test audience she showed the nearly finished film to a couple of christmases ago. I haven't had chance to see it since it was finished but I've heard nothing but good things about it. I really want to get a copy to show family and friends.

sheesh, what is *with* all these hott trans dyke DJ's?

yeah, gwen told me about the several test screenings that were undertaken. i can't imagine the time and energy that this work took to bring together.

IIRC it was her MA project. She poured a lot of her soul into it, as you can tell as soon as you watch it. Even though I only saw them through the film, it's clear that her family and friends are pretty cool too. It was really neat to be allowed that tiny peek behind the scenes of how she made the film. I can't wait to find out what she's going to do next : )

Well at the same event, my friend Nicole was dancing with her back to a giant fan, and so all these chunks of her neck-length hair started to fly up into the air and I exclamed, "hey, the fan is giving you Gwen-hair!" And she was quite flattered.

This film has caused me to cry spontaneous multipurpose tears of joy, catharsis, relief and elation for the last week since seeing it. Someone has finally made a film that gives positive, authentic, non-sexualized visibility to younger queer transwomen, their families, their experiences. The montage of her post-op self-acceptance and femmy-butch/tomboy awakening - and deciding that she doens't want her trach shave resonates with me on such a personal level in so many ways...

... not to mention that she is just so damn hott.
