trans health conference 2008
i just returned to toronto from the 2008 trans health conference in philly. after 2 nights of parties, 3 days of conferences, 1 presentation on providers day, and one workshop on the community days, after countless brilliant conversations, after meeting many amazing people, after being and after 6 hours of sleep in two days i can do nothing but a list of things that i feel now that i didn't feel 4 days ago...

i feel much less alone
i feel stronger and more confident in this world
i feel so excited to have met some amazing people
i know that i need to travel a lot more as it makes me feel so alive
i know that i need to leave toronto, for good; it's toxic for me
i know how destructive routines are for me
i know i am much more independent than i really realized
i know that i have the potential to be a really good educator

i know there's so much more. i am left exhausted and processing though it's mostly going in circles right now.

as a final note... one particularly moving highlight was eli clare's keynote resisting shame which is available for download off of his website. i highly recommend reading it though hearing eli speak, being able to articulate how certainly he moves everyone in the room, is something that can't be described adequately.

I enjoyed your workshop, it was great hearing things articulated in different ways.

If you move to BC, perchance, then Vancouver's bike scene would be very happy to have a new fixie chick :)

I'm glad you guys made it home safe.

It was fantastic meeting you, although I'm a bit embaressed that I spent the morning yarking in the washroom. breakfast would have been great.

H and I are planning on coming up for pride, so it'll be excitingpants all over the place.

Did you get to see the speech by Smitherman? I would love to get more details on the relisting (or am I thinking of a different conference?)

I'm glad you feel more confident about your abilities. Teaching sounds like it could be a good job for those so inclined. & I agree with you: Toronto can be an antagonistic place. I hope I don't wind up there, but what you can do...

After reading all of the posts about the conference from awesome people, I'm wishing I'd thought to mention you all to each other *beforehand* - oh, well, sounds like you didn't need my help ;-)

yay!

It was nice to see you in person even if we never really hung out in a significant way. :(

You should move to Chicago! Despite f'ed up shit that's happened, we may be the first place in the continent to be specifically organizing against trans misogyny... and I've just met (past 2 weeks) three cool trans women here.

And next year we need to have some organized resistance to trans misogyny at Philly. We totally have the critical mass to change things if we try. Even without that, it was fun, tho.

yes and yes. Serano's speaking, otherwise I'd say no, since both she, Shawna Virago, Tobi, and I all felt tokenized when we went... but given that Serano's a keynote speaker, I feel like there's going to be a sea change. And if there's trans misogyny, well, we'll make sure to fuck shit up.

On the other hand, I do wonder if it's just another level of tokenizing, given their earlier postings that conspicuously leave out trans stuff . (They add it into their call for proposals two months later.)

Maybe I/we/others should try to hold a workshop even though the deadline is past. ... (see soon-to-be-recent post)
